30′ Nonsuch Ultra – 1985
The Nonsuch 30′ Ultra is a sailing yacht that holds a special place in the world of cat-rigged sailboats.
The Nonsuch 30′ Ultra was designed by Mark Ellis and introduced in 1989 as an evolution of the original Nonsuch 30. The Nonsuch series of sailboats was conceived by George Hinterhoeller, who aimed to create a vessel that offered the performance and ease of sailing of a catboat while maintaining the comforts and accommodations of a cruising yacht.
The Nonsuch 30′ Ultra featured a sleek hull design with a single freestanding carbon fiber mast positioned well forward. The mast’s location eliminated the need for a traditional mainsail with its associated rigging, making the boat exceptionally easy to handle and sail. Instead, the Nonsuch 30′ Ultra utilized a large, fully battened, and self-tacking wishbone boom sail, known as a “Nonsuch rig,” which provided excellent power and balance.
With its cat-rigged configuration, the Nonsuch 30′ Ultra offered simplicity in sail handling, allowing single-handed sailing with ease. The absence of multiple sails and rigging reduced the complexity of sailing maneuvers, making it an attractive option for both experienced sailors and those new to the sport.
The interior layout of the Nonsuch 30′ Ultra was designed with cruising comfort in mind. It featured a spacious main salon, a well-appointed galley, a comfortable V-berth cabin forward, and a head compartment. The open-plan layout provided ample living space and a feeling of airiness. The boat’s construction typically included a fiberglass hull and a well-finished teak interior, reflecting the high-quality craftsmanship associated with Nonsuch yachts.
The Nonsuch 30′ Ultra enjoyed a successful production run until 1995 when Hinterhoeller ceased boatbuilding operations. During its production years, the Nonsuch 30′ Ultra gained a reputation for its solid construction, excellent sailing performance, and comfortable accommodations. It has remained popular among sailors who appreciate its simplicity, seaworthiness, and the joy of sailing a cat-rigged yacht.
Today, the Nonsuch 30′ Ultra continues to attract sailing enthusiasts who value its unique design and cruising capabilities. Owners associate through the International Nonsuch Association at http://www.nonsuch.org.
